I was watching a movie on Netflix called On.The.Basis.Of.Sex. It’s a biographical movie depicting the life of Ruth Ginsburg and how she got the US Supreme Court to declare some laws are unconstitutional because they discriminate on the basis of sex. She was able to do that by telling the Court that they need to set a new precedent
It made me think that even though they are still work to be made the US has made huge advancement, and you are the next generation and what applied 50 years ago won’t apply to you by the time you reach your adult life. And so it’s important that you think outside the box to make sure you catch those situations that don’t apply to you anymore
For example, certain African Americans don’t call themselves that anymore but rather be called Blacks because they don’t know their African heritage or even the African culture.
I have noticed that this country value race differentiation, because in everything you do or applies to, there is always one question that asks you for your race. When applying for College or for a job position, I was always asked to enter something for my race, I wasn’t sure what since I am not an African American, although I am black I am also French.
This country made me feel and continues to make me feel more African than French. The last time I went to my parents’ country in Africa I was 12.
There were no categories that fitted my race. And this will be truer for future generations as a lot of babies born by mixed couples.
